Growing up Laura wanted to be either a singer or a neuropsychologist. Fascinated by the way our brains function, she wanted to study how this impacts our personalities.
She openly admits, “I was not a very good singer and that dream died….” But that doesn’t mean she can’t ham it up on occasion!
Luckily for her clients, Laura found her way to being a (singing, crafting) financial advisor.
“I always knew that being a financial advisor was a job. My mom was a pension and trust administrator, and a neighbor was a trust advisor. Knowing this, I decided to become an advisor.” This knowledge and an interest is in helping people understand what goes on with their money and “How it all works” is a personal driver for Laura.
If she had not become a financial advisor, she would be a history teacher. “My degree is in history, and I absolutely love it! I feel there is a lot to learn there. Studying history taught me how to research and I developed critical thinking from there. Most of my degree was researching then writing, not memorizing dates at all. For an example of how it can help us in the present, look at any kind of global current event. The politics of these areas did not come from any one-time incident. We have the opportunity to learn from history at every turn.”
Laura’s retirement dream is the quintessential cottage life. “I want to feel secure and be able to hang out with my family and friends. I’d love to live near them and enjoy life by reading books from the local library and being creative.”
Giving back to the community is something Laura finds important. She works with the United Way’s Asset program to increase financial literacy. The program is rooted in the belief everyone should know what options they have and what opportunities are available. A primary goal of Asset is for each person to reach $100 to $1000 in savings within the first six months. This means we they encounter an emergency they can focus on what is going on and not the financial ramifications.
Fun facts about Laura:
Go ahead. Ask her what high school she went to!
She’s been compared to Zooey Deschanel, the actress from New Girl. She suspects the comparisons are because she has dark hair, glasses, and wears dresses and skirts, and like crafts.
She’s a proud dog mom to Alfie, a cavapoo. His formal name is Alfred Reginald Slawski. “He’s very adorable. He won second place in The Cutest Pet Contest at my husband’s law firm in 2020. And I think Alfie is the best dog in the world!”
Laura enjoys reading novels, especially those with good foreshadowing, and she likes to learn to create. She can sew, knit, and just learned how to crochet.
Hosting Jeopardy fits in with Laura’s love of trivia. If anyone from Jeopardy is reading this, she’s ready to rotate in as host!
Ask Laura about her six-week vacation through Europe and “The Window” from the Defenestration of Prague (1618).
For Laura, wealth means being able to roll with what comes your way. I believe in having savings set aside for an emergency so that when it does happen, you can focus on getting through the emergency emotionally and not have the extra financial worry.”
